PUTHU YUGAM
Puthu Yugam,’ a Comprehensive Educational project, was planned with an aim to provide facilities for professional education to the largely neglected section of the society: it aims at helping them get an equal facility to explore their potential, get opportunity to uplift themselves and achieve financial prosperity and independence. The vision of Puthu Yugam is formed in pursuit of a common noble object of imparting quality education to economically and socially backward students of government and aided schools in Ernakulam with adequate academic support and training. The Project “Puthu Yugam” is lending support to the meritorious students hailing from poor socio-economic background to get coaching for appearing in various entrance examinations.
Medical and engineering entrance coaching is given to students for 450 hours, and communicative English training is imparted for 50 hours. Entrance exam coaching is supported by Alphonse Kannanthanam Academy of Career while Southerland Global Services provides coaching for Communicative English. Cochin Shipyard and Bharat Petroleum Corporation provides financial aid to the project.
Complete transparency is ensured in the selection of the eligible students. It is ensured that only financially backward and meritorious students were selected for the project. Students were selected through a screening test conducted. They were short listed for admission on the basis of the following criteria

Selection of eligible students from the list of short listed students has been done by the monitoring committee members comprising the District Collector, Deputy Director of Education and Regional Deputy Director of Education.
Phases
• Level 1– Puthu Yugam CEP started with Medical/ Engineering extended crash entrance programme for students who completed 12th standard, on 4th February, 2017. 117 meritorious students were selected from the applications received by way of a screening test conducted.
Level 2: Medical/ Engineering Entrance coaching 2017-18
• After the successful completion of the crash programe, Puthu Yugam CEP has extended this program to 400 students who are in 12th by conducting Medical/ Engineering entrance coaching for them for a year.
• Level 3: Medical/ Engineering Entrance coaching 2018-19
• The Project is now extended to the next Academic year, 2018-19. The screening and admission process has already completed for the current batch. This year the benefit of the project is being extended to 450 students by including 50 children from the fishermen families who are affected by the Okhi cyclone.
The project is supporting as many numbers of students as possible, hailing from poor economic background through CSR funds, enabling them to secure adequate coaching for professional college entrance examinations. By giving career-oriented coaching, we provide equal opportunities to all, which can contribute towards development. It also, in turn will uplift the poor and the deprived and that may alleviate poverty and may narrow the gulf between the rich and the poor.
